A campaign for life.

SIGN THE GLOBAL DEAL FOR NATURE

Sign the petition calling on world leaders to support a Global Deal for Nature that protects and restores half of the Earth’s lands and oceans.

WHAT IS THE SURVIVAL REVOLUTION?

The Survival Revolution is an international movement harnessing the power of people and storytelling to protect half of Earth’s land and seas in time to save our common home and the future. Your voice is needed.

Survival Revolution volunteer influencers are nature’s most valuable assets. In 2020, Survival Revolution influencers (you can be one too! – link to join page) touched over 30 million people in more than a dozen countries with fascinating stories and compelling calls to action for Half. In 2021, influencers will attempt to increase this number to 100 million in the lead up to two global decisions in which world leaders will decide how much nature they will set aside for humanity’s survival.

You don’t need to be a celebrity to be an influencer – you just need to believe that Earth’s wildlife and wild places are valuable, and be ready to share (or make!) content for one week every month throughout the year about the critical necessity of protecting half of Earth’s land and seas.

Facebook / Instagram: It can be easy to forget how much we need wild nature – after all, we tend to think of nature being somewhere out there, faraway from our day-to-day lives. But the reality is that our entire existence is dependent on the life-giving services produced by wilderness and wild nature.

This month, the Survival Revolution features the role nature plays in delivering clean, fresh, and abundant water, and how we are more dependent on this water supply than we probably even realise.

How much water do we consume, where does it come from, and how do we protect it? See some of those answers below in our very shareable infographic!

Facebook / Instagram: Have you considered how much water you use and its relation to issues of equity and justice? With a modern wave of water awareness and conservation, some people can approximately identify how much water they personally use each day. But between a developed country and a developing country there’s not only a difference in the amount of water consumption, but also where that water goes.

Facebook / Instagram: Did you know around 35% of the world’s primary forest has been lost to deforestation? A huge percent of the remaining amount left is still vulnerable to industrial logging and degradation. Old growth or primary forests are defined as intact land areas that are at least 150 years old and have not been subjected to human degradation or deforestation. Deforestation occurs when forests are converted to non-forest uses, such as agriculture and road construction. Ecosystems then lose their capacity to provide essential services like: carbon storage, water filtration, and coastal flooding, and many more. Forests are one of our biggest allies in the fight to mitigate climate change. If we halt deforestation we could reduce carbon emissions by 10-15%. Research shows the positive impact our forests have, but if we continue to kill our ally, in the end, it will only culminate into disaster for all. Take Action:

Facebook / Instagram: Wherever you live, the lesson of climate change hits the hardest when it directly and noticeably affects your home. For those living in Texas, it was a cold (literally) wake up call when they experienced the state’s unprepared response to frigid weather. This also happened in 1989 and in 2011 with organization reports issuing recommendations on how to prevent a recurrence. It seems the lesson is continuously forgotten over so many decades. Hopefully, the third time’s the charm. How often do you think we do this with other climate emergencies? How many lessons do you think it will take to force us into action? @natureneedshalf @WILDfoundation #survivalrevolution #globaldealfornature

WHY PROTECT HALF?

Because you believe people have a right to a future, you believe in wild nature. Setting aside 50% of the planet for nature is the fastest, most efficient action we can take toward solving the twin climate and extinction emergencies, reducing the likelihood of new pandemics, and protecting the livelihoods of 1.6 billion people.

FAQs

HOW MUCH WILD NATURE DO PEOPLE NEED?

Good question! Since the 1970s, contemporary scientists have observed that natural landscapes begin to lose critically needed life-support functions after more than approximately 50% of the landscape is destroyed. For fragile ecosystems, like rainforests, that number can be a lot higher – in the range of 75-80%.

Without the life-support functions of these landscapes, local human populations suffer. And as more of the Earth is overdeveloped, the consequences for humans are no longer limited to the local, and are now beginning to be felt on a planetary scale.

WHAT DOES WILD NATURE DO FOR CLIMATE?

It’s simple! Without sufficient amounts of wild nature, we cannot keep temperature rise below 2°C. Why? Because Earth’s primary forests, grasslands, and peat bogs store more than 100 parts per million (ppm) carbon in plants and soils, carbon that must remain in the ground if it is to not contribute to climate change.

In order to avoid the catastrophic effects from climate change Earth must remain well under 450 ppm in the atmosphere. At the end of 2019, the world has just over 408 ppm. Destroying even a quarter of our remaining wild areas would remove a critically necessary carbon sink that is – without any cost to society – helping us avert the worst effects of runaway climate change.

WHAT DOES WILD NATURE DO FOR EXTINCTION?

The data are clear. The single greatest cause of extinction is habitat loss, making the destruction of Earth’s wild places the most severe threat to life. Wildlife serves vitally important functions for all of life. Whales and sharks feed the phytoplankton that emit half of Earth’s oxygen. Rhinos and bats plant the trees and shrubs that stabilize regional climates and produce healthy air. To protect life’s allies we must set aside enough space for them to live. Wild nature is their home.

Over one million species are projected to go extinct in the next fifty years if we do not set aside enough habitat to protect them. Protected areas and sustainably managed and restored lands (areas where human communities dwell in harmony with nature) are the cornerstones of biodiversity and wildlife. They give nature the space it needs to function for the benefit of all life.

WHAT DOES WILD NATURE DO FOR PEOPLE?

Besides producing the air we breathe, the water we drink, the soils that grow our food, and the stability we count on, wild nature also provides the livelihoods for over 1.6 billion people! Local communities living in or near wild places count on forests for food and forage, oceans for enough fish to feed their families, and grasslands for places to graze their livestock. Without healthy wild places, hundreds of millions of human livelihoods would be directly impacted, causing global social upheaval and instability on an unprecedented scale.

WHY IS HALF NEEDED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE?

When is it more effective and efficient to protect something: Before or after it has been destroyed? In the next 20-30 years, we are on track to build 25 million km of roads (enough to encircle the Earth 600x), double the amount of building square footage across the planet, and fill the ocean with more plastic than there are fish. Recovering these important land and seascapes will be much more expensive after they have already been destroyed. We also jeopardize life on Earth by removing essential parts in Earth’s wild, green engine.

The single most efficient and effective step we can take to address climate change, end extinction, and defend human livelihoods, is to protect half the planet by 2030 while it is still functioning for the benefit of all life.

HOW WILL WE PROTECT ENOUGH NATURE IN TIME?

Indigenous and local peoples have sustained wild nature before there was ever even a “wilderness” or “nature needs half” concept. Nature Needs Half fully supports and empowers local people to continue to manage their lands sustainably, as they do throughout the world. (More than 1/3 of all remaining intact wild areas are stewarded by Indigenous and local people.)

Nature Needs Half envisions a world where nature is protected through a combination of strategies that include: official protected area categories, sustainably managed and restored lands, and sustainable and efficient cities. The good news is that even though only 17% of Earth’s land and 10% of Earth’s seas are protected in 2020, we still have a little over half of Earth’s natural landscapes that are intact. By leaving these undisturbed, we can easily achieve half in the next decade.

WHAT CAN I DO TO HELP?

Your help is needed in 2020 more than ever before! Many people around the world remain unaware of the critical role nature plays in the well-being of all mankind. Without their support, it is unlikely our leaders will act swiftly.

We need your help. Be a Survival Revolution ambassador! Share monthly updates and important calls to action with your networks on social media and beyond! To discover more about how to be an ambassador, click here.
